About this book
In a city full of rumor, a young woman listens, watches, and weighs what she hears about Jesus.
Adina comes to Jerusalem with a curious mind and a careful eye. Not yet a follower of Jesus, she writes letters about the city and its people. Talk of a teacher from Galilee draws her attention. In Joseph Holt Ingraham's novel, her observations bring the gospel story close through streets, crowds, feasts, and conversations.
Jerusalem is a Jewish holy city under Roman power, and the teacher's growing influence draws concern. Adina hears parables, sees the sick brought forward, and records how ordinary people respond. Pontius Pilate must keep order, while Caiaphas watches Jesus with unease. Through her letters, the novel explores how people recognize what stands before them—or see only what they expect.

A young woman finds a Temple losing its spirit
Adina arrives in Jerusalem from Alexandria after a long road through Gaza. She writes at once to her father, as she promised. Her letters make up the whole book, and they carry a daughter's love and a sharp eye.
She stays with Amos, a Levite and a priest. Her first visit to the Temple startles her. The outer court is packed with sellers of doves, lambs and oxen, and the noise drowns out prayer. At dawn a thousand silver trumpets wake the city. Then Roman bugles cut across the evening rite, and Adina weeps.
