About this book
On a dying Mars, a soldier carries his sword into hostile country for a woman beyond his reach.
Tan Hadron of Hastor is a panthan: a soldier who serves for pay and takes his sword wherever it is wanted. But his love for Sanoma Tora gives him a purpose no payment can settle. When a crisis separates them, he sets out across Barsoom, driven by her fate and his own sense of honor.
In A Fighting Man of Mars, Edgar Rice Burroughs opens a world of dry sea bottoms, ancient cities, flying ships, and endless wars. Mars has lost most of its water and air. Across this harsh landscape, danger, pursuit, and escape test a young warrior whose loyalty matters as much as his skill with a sword.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A poor officer loves a rich woman
Tan Hadron of Hastor tells his own story. His father, Had Urtur, commands the largest warship Hastor has ever given to the navy of Helium, and his mother is a princess of Gathol. The family is rich only in honor. Hadron chooses the army of Helium and becomes a padwar, a junior officer, in the Ninety-first Umak, hoping to serve near John Carter, Warlord of Mars.
His career is ordinary until a feast in the Warlord's marble palace. There he meets Sanoma Tora, daughter of Tor Hatan, the odwar who commands his umak. Her beauty stands out even beside the great beauties of Helium. She glances at his insignia, sees only a padwar, and turns away. The insult does not cool him. The hardest goal has always seemed the best to Hadron, so he falls in love.
