About this book
What if death is a doorway, and love is the bond that carries the soul beyond it?
In The Life Everlasting, Marie Corelli turns romance into an exploration of the soul. She presents love as something deeper than a bond between bodies or families, and imagines a life that reaches beyond death. Her central claim gives the book its stakes: the body ends, but the soul does not.
Corelli also seeks a meeting place for faith and science. Writing amid discoveries in physics and electricity, she argues that religion and science point toward one power rather than opposing truths. This is a romance of ideas as much as feeling, offering warmth and wonder through its vision of a meaningful universe.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A cruise begins with a silent ship
The story opens in a hot summer, when the narrator, a woman who works hard and studies the hidden side of life, receives an urgent invitation. It comes from Morton Harland, an American millionaire who has become a British subject and who once wrote a cold attack on religion. He has a fatal illness, he says, and his daughter Catherine is always ailing. He wants company for a cruise on his steam yacht, the Diana, through the Western Isles.
She agrees, though she dislikes him, and travels north by train with her friend Francesca, who warns her that invalids make tiresome company. At Rothesay she boards the Diana and finds her cabin filled with roses, while Catherine's own rooms are bare and plain. On board are also Dr. Brayle, a smooth physician with watchful eyes, and Mr. Swinton, a secretary who thinks only of shorthand. The narrator senses at once that Brayle gains from keeping his patients ill.
