About this book
How do you trace a sacred world when its priests leave almost no written teachings?
In The Religion of the Ancient Celts, J. A. MacCulloch gathers scattered clues to Celtic gods, rites and beliefs. He turns to Caesar and other ancient writers, carved stones, inscriptions, and Irish and Welsh tales preserved by Christian scribes. The question is not only what these peoples believe, but how much the surviving evidence can tell us.
The survey moves from local gods and powerful goddesses to sacred groves, rivers and springs. Druids appear as priests, judges and teachers, while festivals mark the turning year. MacCulloch also examines sacrifice, magic and beliefs about death and rebirth. Published in 1911, this is a study of its time, dated in places but attentive to the challenge of weighing uncertain evidence.

In short
How can we piece together Celtic belief? That is the puzzle MacCulloch takes on in this 1911 survey.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Celtic religion survives in scattered evidence
The Celts were not one nation but many related peoples, spread from Gaul and the British Isles to parts of central Europe. Each tribe had its own gods and habits, so MacCulloch warns against treating their religion as one tidy system.
He sorts his sources by their flaws. Roman writers like Caesar saw the Gauls through Roman eyes and matched Celtic gods with Roman ones, which can hide the native deity. Irish and Welsh tales were written down by Christian monks, who often turned gods into kings or fairy folk. Carved stones and altars add names of gods otherwise unknown.

What is The Religion of the Ancient Celts about?
It surveys the gods, goddesses, druids, festivals, sacred places and beliefs about death among the Celtic peoples, drawing on Roman writers, inscriptions and later Irish and Welsh tales.
Who were the druids?
In MacCulloch's account, the druids were a learned class of priests, judges and teachers among the Celts. They led sacrifices, settled disputes and passed on lore by memory rather than writing.
Did the Celts have written scriptures?
No sacred texts of the ancient Celts survive. The druids taught by memory, so scholars rely on Roman reports, carved stones and medieval Irish and Welsh stories written down by Christians.
