About this book
When suspicion can send a person to the guillotine, love becomes a dangerous bond.
In Lord Tony's Wife, Baroness Orczy brings romance into the shadow of the French Revolution. Lord Anthony Dewhurst, known as Tony, belongs to the secret League of the Scarlet Pimpernel. His marriage stands at the heart of an adventure where love and duty pull in different directions.
Between England and a France ruled by fear, spies, arrests and sudden death threaten every act of courage. Sir Percy Blakeney leads the League in saving lives while posing as a bored, fashionable gentleman. Disguises, sudden meetings and dramatic speeches give this story its bold, theatrical suspense.

The story opens in 1789 near Nantes. A wheelwright named Antoine Melun is sentenced to hang for trapping two pigeons on the land of the duc de Kernogan.
Pierre Adet rallies a crowd against the duke by setting his father's straw ricks on fire as a signal and handing out scythes and axes, naming a private grievance for each man. The old miller, Jean Adet, begs them to stop and fails. Their march ends in ruin when soldiers scatter the crowd.
