A village night plants a lasting hatred
The story opens in 1789 near Nantes. A wheelwright named Antoine Melun is sentenced to hang for trapping two pigeons on the land of the duc de Kernogan.
Pierre Adet rallies a crowd against the duke by setting his father's straw ricks on fire as a signal and handing out scythes and axes, naming a private grievance for each man. The old miller, Jean Adet, begs them to stop and fails. Their march ends in ruin when soldiers scatter the crowd.
One moment in the dark carries on through the whole book. Pierre seizes the duke's daughter Yvonne inside her coach and forces kisses on her face and throat. The duke then punishes the rioters and has Pierre's innocent father hanged when Pierre cannot be found. This deepens Pierre's hatred of the family.
