About this book

What happens when love asks you to break the rules that hold your world together?

In The Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas fils, Marguerite Gautier draws admiring eyes in Paris theaters and salons. She is a celebrated courtesan in poor health; Armand Duval is a young man of modest means who loves her sincerely. As they grow close, money, reputation, and his family's name press against their hopes.

Alongside it, The Corsican Brothers by Alexandre Dumas père follows Louis and Lucien de Franchi, twins raised on Corsica. Their lives take different courses, but a mysterious bond holds them together across distance. Here, family honor carries the weight of duty, and vendetta demands an answer to wrongs against kin. Both novels ask what loyalty costs when private feelings meet unforgiving rules.

What you’ll discover

What is The Lady of the Camellias about?

It tells of Marguerite Gautier, a Parisian courtesan, and Armand Duval, a young man who falls deeply in love with her. Their love is tested by jealousy, money and family pressure, and Armand himself tells the story to a narrator.

Why does Marguerite carry camellias?

She carries a bouquet of camellias to every theater, white for twenty-five days of the month and red for five. No one knows the reason for the change, and a florist's nickname gives her the title The Lady of the Camellias.

Is The Lady of the Camellias a true story?

The narrator insists that the tale is true and says he simply passes along what he heard from Armand. Readers treat it as a novel inspired by the world of Paris theaters, balls and courtesans of its day.
