About this book
What happens when a girl's private feelings become a window into the mysteries of growing up?
In A Young Girl's Diary, an unnamed girl in Vienna records life from about eleven to fourteen. Parents, teachers, schoolwork and friendships fill her days. On the page, anger, crushes and fears sit beside sharp judgments of adults. As her body changes, she tries to understand feelings she cannot yet name.
The diary also invites a different kind of curiosity: what can childhood feelings reveal about the adult mind? This question lies at the heart of early psychoanalysis in Vienna. Alongside the narrator's everyday concerns, you encounter the interests of thinkers who look to childhood for clues to how people think and feel.

In short
What does a girl hide in her diary when her sister snoops? Grete, called Rita by her best friend Hella, starts writing at eleven, just before a holiday in Tyrol.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Two friends promise to write every day
The diary opens in July with an entrance exam passed and a promise made. Grete and her friend Hella agree to keep diaries when they start high school. They give each other new names, Rita and Hella, because their real ones sound vulgar to them.
The first holiday in Tyrol shows the household. Her older sister Dora claims the veranda and the arbor, and Grete refuses to be driven off. Father is fair and says the verandas belong to everyone, while Mother, Grete feels, favors Dora. Letters from Hella arrive often, and Grete writes pages that blow away in the wind.
