About this book
What if a flower glimpsed in a dream could change the way you see the world?
In Henry of Ofterdingen, Novalis follows Heinrich, a thoughtful young man whose dream of a blue flower awakens a longing he cannot put aside. He leaves Eisenach with his mother and a party of merchants. Along the road, stories and encounters begin to shape his calling as a poet.
A captive singer named Zulima longs for her homeland. An old miner leads Heinrich into the mountain, and a hermit opens another world through books. In Augsburg, the poet Klingsohr and his daughter Mathilde draw him toward poetry and love. This slow, symbolic, unfinished novel asks whether poetry is a way of knowing life.

A stranger's tale plants a blue flower
The book opens at night in the house of Henry's parents in Eisenach. Henry, a young man of twenty, lies awake thinking of a stranger whose stories have woken a longing for the blue flower. It is not the treasures that hold him. He can think of nothing but the flower.
He feels as if until now he has been dreaming. Animals, trees and rocks seem to stand on the edge of speech. Then he sleeps and dreams of a dark forest, a cave with a column of golden light, and a basin of glowing water where the waves take shape as lovely beings.

What is Henry of Ofterdingen about?
It follows a young poet who dreams of a blue flower, travels with his mother from Eisenach to Augsburg, meets teachers and a first love, and learns what poetry is. The second part survives only as a fragment.
What does the blue flower mean?
The blue flower stands for longing, the pull toward something beyond ordinary life. In the book it is tied to poetry and to Matilda, whose face Henry sees in its petals in his dream.
Is Henry of Ofterdingen a true story?
No, it is a Romantic novel. Novalis loosely draws on a medieval singer of the age of the minnesingers, but the events, travels and tales are invented, and the book was left unfinished at the author's death in 1801.
