About this book

Learning to behave like a gentleman is one thing. Making good decisions is quite another.

In Frank E. Smedley’s comic novel, Frank Fairlegh tells his own story of growing up among private pupils. Under a tutor’s care, he faces lessons that reach well beyond answering questions. He must hold his own with other young men, find friends, and work out what deserves his respect.

Friendship brings warmth, mischief, and fresh complications. Frank’s companions help shape his ideas of courage, generosity, and shame, but growing older asks more of him. As pupil life opens into wider social encounters and romantic interests, the gap between gentlemanly manners and sound judgment gives the story its lively comic edge.

Young men test one another under a tutor

Frank Fairlegh tells his own story, looking back on the experiences that shape his passage from boyhood toward adult life. His education places him among other young men under a private tutor, rather than in the larger world of a public school. Lessons matter, but so do the personalities gathered around them. Living and studying together gives the pupils plenty of chances to test one another, form loyalties, and get into trouble.
