What does it take to build a new life when ambition pulls one way and family pulls another?
Elkan Lubliner arrives from Eastern Europe with hopes of making his way in the United States. In Montague Glass’s comic novel, becoming American means more than pursuing success. Family pressures and the bustle of business give his ambition a human scale, with room for both affection and laughter.
Jewish immigrant life in early twentieth-century New York gives the story its setting. Glass brings humor to the pursuit of the American dream, letting family clashes and business hustle carry the theme rather than preaching about it. The appeal lies in watching hope meet the demands of making a living.
