About this book

What if saving the family estate means giving up the person you love?

In Anthony Trollope’s Doctor Thorne, Mary Thorne grows up beside Frank Gresham in the village of Greshamsbury. She is clever and proud, but has neither a fortune nor certain birth to recommend her. Frank loves her. His mother, Lady Arabella, wants a wealthy bride who can rescue the family’s debt-burdened estate.

Mary’s uncle, Doctor Thomas Thorne, stands close to both families: honest, sharp-witted, and trusted with secrets and money. Around him, old rank meets railway wealth, and marriage becomes a family strategy. Trollope’s friendly, opinionated narrator draws you into a quiet, funny story that asks whether birth and fortune matter more than character.

What you’ll discover

  • Love under family pressure Follow Frank’s stubborn devotion and Mary’s refusal to join a family against its wishes.
  • A doctor worth knowing Meet an uncle whose fierce loyalty sits beside the demands of keeping other people’s trust.
  • Great houses, uneasy fortunes Step into Greshamsbury, where an old family’s pride rests on an estate burdened with debt.
  • Humour among the schemers Enjoy Miss Dunstable’s good humour as she sees through those who court her fortune.
  • Worth beyond a name Consider what makes a person worthy when rank and money seem to govern every choice.

Greshamsbury is an old house sinking into debt

Barsetshire is a farming county where old names count for more than money made in trade. At its heart sits Greshamsbury, a Tudor house whose gates are guarded by stone pagans. Beneath them runs the family motto, Gardez Gresham. Neighbours argue whether it tells the pagans to guard the Greshams or warns everyone else to beware them.
