About this book
What stories cling to an old house, a Christmas custom, or a path into the Catskill Mountains?
In The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Washington Irving moves between American legends and an American traveller’s impressions of Britain. His invented observer, Geoffrey Crayon, notices old buildings, local customs, and small encounters. Across the Atlantic, he finds a country that feels familiar through books, yet offers its own life to explore.
The collection includes Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow alongside essays and connected Christmas pieces. Rip escapes household demands into the Catskills, where a strange encounter interrupts ordinary life. At Bracebridge Hall, an old-fashioned host keeps traditional celebrations alive with food, games, ceremony, and hospitality.

In short
Have you ever stepped off a ship into a country you loved from books and felt like a stranger there? Washington Irving describes that feeling at the end of The Voyage.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A sea voyage clears the mind
Irving begins by describing himself as a born wanderer. As a boy he read travel books instead of his lessons and watched ships sail from the piers. America has natural grandeur, he says, but Europe offers history, ruins and old customs. So he went, and he calls the result a sketchbook of nooks and corners.
The crossing matters because the ocean cuts the traveler off at once. Irving calls the water a blank page between two volumes of life. Leaning over the rail, he builds fairy kingdoms from golden clouds. Then the crew sights a drifting mast with scraps of handkerchiefs tied to it, and Irving imagines the families who waited for news that never came.
