About this book
Why do people willingly obey one ruler when they resist so many others?
In Cyropaedia: The Education of Cyrus, Xenophon follows a Persian prince as he learns to command and builds an empire. History and imagined events meet in a story of power earned through discipline, generosity, and attention to other people’s motives. The question is not simply how Cyrus wins, but why others choose to follow.
Cyrus begins with an education in justice, restraint, endurance, and obedience. His father, Cambyses, teaches him to prepare carefully and use authority with judgment. Campaigns test those lessons through supplies, shared hardship, and rewards for service. Alongside these decisions, Panthea and her husband, Abradatas, bring love, trust, and obligation into the world of conquest.

In short
Cyropaedia means the education of Cyrus. It is a work in eight books by Xenophon, an Athenian soldier and writer who died in 355 BC.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Ruling willing people is possible
Xenophon opens with a problem. Cattle follow their herdsmen and give up their produce without a murmur. Human beings, by contrast, band together against anyone who tries to govern them. Democracies fall to tyrants, and tyrants fall to the people, and even a small household is hard to command.
Then he thinks of Cyrus the Persian. Cyrus ruled Medes, Syrians, Assyrians, Lydians, Babylonians, Bactrians, Egyptians and many more, spread across lands so wide that a journey from edge to edge would test any traveller. Some of his subjects lived months away and never laid eyes on him, yet they obeyed. They feared him, and they also longed to please him.
