About this book

What if you could hear Hannibal, Socrates, Queen Elizabeth and Dante speak their minds?

In Imaginary Conversations and Poems, Walter Savage Landor brings real people from different ages into invented conversations. Kings, philosophers, soldiers and poets reveal themselves through speech, with no narrator to explain them. This selection pairs those dramatic dialogues with short poems, giving you both the force of argument and the pleasure of clear, polished verse.

The conversations reach into Greece and Rome, where figures such as Hannibal and Socrates face questions of duty and pride. Queen Elizabeth and Dante bring voices from later ages. These are people as Landor imagines them: their words reveal character, while the poems offer a quieter art of clarity, restraint and carefully shaped lines.

Enemies can still show each other compassion

The first dialogue sets the tone for the whole book. Hannibal finds the Roman commander Marcellus wounded on the ground and at once orders help. A Gaulish chieftain demands the golden chain from the fallen man's horse, and Hannibal buys him off with his own bridle so the dying man can be tended in peace.

What is Imaginary Conversations about?

It is a series of invented dialogues between famous people, from Hannibal and Marcellus to Dante and Beatrice. Their lively speech moves among questions of mercy, ambition, faith, friendship and the worth of poets.

Who is who in the Pentameron?

The Pentameron is a talk between the Italian writers Boccaccio and Petrarca at Boccaccio's villa. Assunta is his lively maid, and Fra Biagio is a nosy friar who visits the house.

Are the conversations real history?

No, they are imagined. Landor uses real people and real settings, but the words are his own invention, written to show characters and ideas in sharp, memorable clash.
