About this book
Why are we here, and how does Catholic teaching connect that question to belief, prayer, and daily life?
Baltimore Catechism No. 3 approaches these questions through a clear sequence of questions and answers. Intended for older students and adults who know the basics, it moves through the Apostles Creed, the Church’s teaching authority, grace, and the seven sacraments, presenting a connected outline of Catholic belief.
The book grows out of the catechism approved by the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1884. Its lessons move from what Catholics believe to how they are called to live. The Ten Commandments, prayer, and the last things bring its account of doctrine into questions of conduct, purpose, and death.

In short
Baltimore Catechism No. 3 is a handbook of Catholic belief written as questions and answers.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
We exist to know and love God
The catechism opens with the biggest question it can ask. Why am I here? Its answer is that God made us to show forth His goodness and to share with us His everlasting happiness in heaven. Everything else in the book hangs from that one sentence. Doctrine, rules, and prayers are all presented as means toward that end.
From there the first lessons explain what it means to be a creature made by God. A human being has a body and a soul, and the soul is spiritual and will not die. The soul has an intellect to know and a will to choose. Because we are made in the likeness of God, the book says, we can understand truth and love what is good. That is why we are responsible for our choices.

What is the difference between Baltimore Catechism No. 1, 2 and 3?
They are levels of the same teaching. The first is for the youngest children, the second for those preparing for first Communion and confirmation, and the third is more advanced, for older students and adults.
Who wrote Baltimore Catechism No. 3?
The bishops of the Third Plenary Council of Baltimore approved the catechism, and Father Thomas L. Kinkead is linked to its editing. The work also draws on the earlier catechism of Saint Robert Bellarmine.
