About this book
What does it take to build a life where illness, forest dangers, and unfamiliar country test your resolve?
Paul de La Gironière reaches Manila as a young French physician with little money and a trade to practise. In Adventures in the Philippine Islands, he recounts life in a Spanish colony, where disease and the limits of medicine shape his early years.
Beyond the city lies Jala-Jala, the estate he establishes beside Laguna de Bay. Forest, wild animals, and bandits make life uncertain. His memoir follows him through rivers, lakes, and mountains, bringing him into contact with Spanish officials, Filipino villagers, and communities beyond the lowland farms.

Boldness and past kindness save a life in Cavite
In September 1820 cholera strikes Manila. A rumor runs through the streets that foreigners are poisoning the rivers. Fear turns to rage, and on October 9 a massacre begins in Manila and Cavite. Almost all the French residents are killed, including the captain of La Gironière's own ship.
A mob chases the doctor to a boat. He goes back ashore for Captain Drouant, shoves aside the man about to knife him, and shouts to him to run. Then four hundred men close in on the doctor.
