About this book
What can a clever detective do against a man who follows no moral rule?
A Broken Bond; Or, the Man Without Morals belongs to the Nick Carter detective series, written under the name Nicholas Carter. At its center stands Nick Carter, a private detective known for sharp thinking, strength, and tireless courage. His appeal is direct: he brings both brains and nerve to the pursuit of crime.
The title points toward broken trust and a figure willing to act without moral limits. That promise sets the mood for an old-fashioned detective adventure: a difficult crime, a trail of clues, and a guilty party hidden from view. From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A shot from ambush in Brazil
The story begins high in the mountains of South America. A lean, bearded man hides behind a rock above a winding road and waits with a rifle. He watches a mule train pass, then listens for a lone rider on horseback. When the rider appears, the hidden man takes aim and fires.
Bad luck spoils the shot. The horse stumbles just as the rifle cracks, and the bullet hits the animal instead of its rider. The rider is thrown but unhurt. The shooter curses the man's devilish luck, hides his rifle in a hollow tree, and slips away through the foothills before anyone can find him.
