À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

Readers who enjoy classic detective adventures, clever disguises, scheming villains and heroes who stay loyal under pressure will find plenty here, along with fans of early American pulp fiction and the Nick Carter series.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

A Broken Bond; Or, the Man Without Morals is a Nick Carter detective story by Nicholas Carter, a name used by the writers of the long-running Nick Carter dime novel series. It was written for readers who liked fast crime tales in the early twentieth century, and it gives you a plot built on loyalty, madness and a doctor who sells his skill to a killer.

The story opens in the mountains of Brazil, where a man fires a rifle from behind a rock at his own partner. From there it follows two old mining comrades, Winthrop Crawford and James Stone, to a ship bound for New York, where Nick Carter happens to be a passenger. Crawford is gentle and loyal. Stone has turned dark and suspicious for reasons nobody understands.

In New York a famous specialist waits, and he sees more than a patient in Stone. You will meet a detective who works in disguise, a fire escape, a bank, a strange hospital and a quiet question: how far will one man go to protect a friend who tries to kill him? Let us begin with the shot from ambush in the hills.

A shot from ambush in Brazil

The story begins high in the mountains of South America. A lean, bearded man hides behind a rock above a winding road and waits with a rifle. He watches a mule train pass, then listens for a lone rider on horseback. When the rider appears, the hidden man takes aim and fires.

Bad luck spoils the shot. The horse stumbles just as the rifle cracks, and the bullet hits the animal instead of its rider. The rider is thrown but unhurt. The shooter curses the man's devilish luck, hides his rifle in a hollow tree, and slips away through the foothills before anyone can find him.

He reaches the Condor Mine, where he is one of two owners who have just sold their shares for a million dollars between them. His name is James Stone, and the target was his partner, Winthrop Crawford. At the camp a young doctor named Charlie Floyd is waiting for him with a stern face.

Floyd had been out walking with his field glasses. He saw the puff of smoke, then saw Stone looking down to check his work. The opening chapter ends on this confrontation, and it sets the question that drives the whole book: what has turned an honest man into a would-be killer? Floyd speaks with pity, not anger. He says he walks with field glasses, and he says he knew the hat at once. Stone grows pale when the glasses are named, but he soon puts on a bold face. He says one of them must die sooner or later, and that he only acted in self-defense. Floyd answers that he holds Stone's freedom in his hands, and the talk turns to the price of his silence.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
