Résumé de À travers la Russie
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers who love short, human portraits of a place and time, and anyone curious about Russia before 1917, with its peasants, vagrants, pilgrims and dreamers.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
Through Russia is a collection of short sketches by Maksim Gorky, drawn from his years as a wanderer on the roads of the Russian empire. Gorky was born Alexei Peshkov, and he took a pen name that means bitter. He wrote these pieces in the years before the revolutions of 1917, looking back on people he had met in villages, riverside towns, inns and shelters.
What do you get from it? A close, unpolished look at ordinary Russians: peasants, vagrants, workers, pilgrims and dreamers. Gorky does not tidy them up. He shows their cruelty, their patience and their odd flashes of warmth. Let us begin with the writer who walked this ground himself.

Point clé 1 sur 4
A writer who learned Russia on foot
Gorky did not study Russia from a desk. Orphaned young, he worked as a dishwasher, baker's helper and labourer, and in his twenties he travelled widely across the empire, often on foot. That life gave him a store of faces and voices, and these sketches draw on it.
The collection takes its shape from the road itself. One scene follows another, with a new person at each turn. The reader moves with the writer from place to place, much as a traveller does.
This matters because Gorky writes as a witness, not a tourist. He sits beside people, listens to their talk and records how they live and what they fear. His authority comes from having been poor and hungry among them. When he describes a crowded shelter or a muddy road, you sense that he has slept there.
That’s 1 of 4 key points.
