De quoi parle ce livre ?
The People That Time Forgot is a lost-world adventure by Edgar Rice Burroughs, set during the First World War and the second of his Caprona tales. It opens in a California library, where a man holds a manuscript he only half believes, written by a college joker named Bowen Tyler. The manuscript describes Caspak, a walled island in the far South Pacific where dinosaurs, cave bears and early human races still live. When news arrives that sends a rescue ship south, the story leaves the library and heads for the cliffs.
From there the book is told by Tom Billings, a former cowhand who flies alone over the barrier cliffs. You get the voice of a man who is brave, a little vain and often wrong about his own heart. You also get an odd and inventive picture of an island where every person climbs, stage by stage, from apelike beginnings to a golden people. Let us start with the frame that sends Billings into the sky.

A manuscript sends a rescue south
The first chapter is a frame. A man travels to the Tyler house in Santa Monica to hand Bowen Tyler's manuscript to his father. He doubts it, because Bowen was known at college as a practical joker. While he and the assistant secretary wait for the father's yacht, the Toreador, they talk through the tale of a torpedoed liner, a captured German submarine and the hidden island of Caspak.
Then the telephone rings with news that Mr. Tyler, Sr., has died at sea. His secretary, Tom Billings, takes charge at once. Billings is a former cowhand who rose through the Tyler business and never shirks the hardest job. Within ten days he has organized an expedition of forty people to find Bowen and the girl who sailed with him, Lys La Rue.
The Toreador steams into cold fog and icebergs, guided by an old map that is badly wrong. When the walls of Caprona finally rise from the mist, they stand thousands of feet high. Billings has three plans to get over them. One is an iron ladder drilled into the rock, one is a line shot over the top by a rescue mortar, and one is a seaplane packed in boxes marked with a letter H. One look at the cliffs settles the matter, and the seaplane is the only choice.
The party finds a narrow beach with the picked-clean bones Bowen described, and the plane is assembled in two days. Billings refuses every volunteer, since he believes asking for them insults the courage of the whole crew. He climbs into the cockpit with a machine gun mounted before him and rises over the summit. Ten minutes later the gun begins to fire, then silence falls, and the people on the beach wait.

Do I need to read The Land That Time Forgot first?
The opening pages recall the earlier tale of the submarine, Bowen Tyler and Lys La Rue. That gives enough background to follow this story, which stands as its own adventure with a new narrator.
What does Caspak mean in the book?
Caspak is the hot, crater-like land inside the barrier cliffs of the island Caprona. Its warm, humid air shelters dinosaurs, cave animals and human tribes at every stage of evolution.
Who are the Galus and the Wieroo?
The Galus are the golden, rope-throwing people at the top of Caspak's ladder of evolution, and Ajor is one of them. The Wieroo are winged, white-robed beings from Oo-oh who steal young Galu girls.
Is The People That Time Forgot easy to follow?
The story moves in short chapters with clear dangers and a single voice. Billings explains each tribe and animal as he meets it, so a reader can follow along from the first page.
