By the Library of Alexandria · 2 minute read · Updated 23 oct. 2026

In short

  • Baloo is the sleepy brown bear who teaches wolf cubs in The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling.
  • He speaks for Mowgli when the wolf pack must decide whether the human child can stay.
  • His lessons teach Mowgli how to ask other creatures for peace and survive in the jungle.

Who Baloo is

Baloo teaches the wolf cubs the Law of the Jungle, the rules that guide their lives with other creatures. Though he is a sleepy brown bear, he takes his work as a teacher seriously.

When Mowgli needs the pack's permission to stay, Baloo speaks for the human boy at Council Rock. He grows deeply fond of Mowgli, but his affection does not make his lessons gentle.

What Baloo wants

Baloo wants Mowgli to learn the rules that can protect him from danger in the jungle. He teaches the Master Words, which let Mowgli ask birds, snakes and beasts for peace.

He thumps Mowgli when he forgets, teaching him like a stern schoolmaster rather than an indulgent friend. Bagheera supports the purpose of these lessons, explaining that a thump is better than a fatal mistake.

Baloo and the others in the story

Baloo and Bagheera both watch over Mowgli, and they rush after him when the monkeys carry him away. Knowing they cannot face hundreds of monkeys alone, they seek help from Kaa, the enormous rock python. Their care for Mowgli takes them beyond teaching rules and into the dangers he faces.
