In short

  • Bagheera is the wise black panther who watches over Mowgli in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.
  • He grows up in captivity and brings knowledge of the human world to his care for the boy.
  • He helps Mowgli join the wolf pack and teaches him how to survive in the jungle.

Who Bagheera is

Bagheera is a cautious black panther whose experience reaches beyond the forest where Mowgli grows up. Born in a king's menagerie, he knows something of the world of men.

When the wolves consider accepting Mowgli, Bagheera offers them a freshly killed bull. His bargain helps secure a place for the human child among the wolves.

Bagheera and the others in the story

Bagheera watches over Mowgli alongside Baloo, the bear who teaches the Law of the Jungle. When Baloo thumps the boy for forgetting his lessons, Bagheera says the blows are better than a fatal mistake.

His care also means telling Mowgli things the boy does not yet understand. He explains that Mowgli is different and that the jungle may one day not be enough for him.

What Bagheera wants

Bagheera helps Mowgli survive by combining practical teaching with caution about danger. When monkeys carry the boy away, he and Baloo turn to Kaa for help. They know the python's strength is useful, but they must treat such a powerful ally with care.
