Résumé de La Maison aux confins
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers who love eerie atmosphere, early weird fiction and the roots of cosmic horror, with haunted houses, monstrous creatures and visions beyond space and time.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
The House on the Borderland is a short horror novel by William Hope Hodgson, published in 1908. Hodgson was an English writer who had been a sailor, and his sea stories already showed his gift for lonely, threatening places. Here he moves the dread from the ocean to a remote house in the west of Ireland, and then far beyond the Earth.
The book gives you a haunted house story, a siege tale and a vision of the universe growing old, all in about two hundred pages. It is told as a found manuscript, so you hear one frightened man's voice from the page. In the first key point, two travelers find that strange record among ruins.

Two fishermen find a ruined house
The story opens in the year 1877. Two friends, a man named Tonnison and his companion Berreggnog, are on a fishing holiday in western Ireland. They stay in the small village of Kraighten, a quiet place far from the rest of the world.
While exploring, they follow a river to a deep chasm. Beside it, on the edge of the drop, they find the broken remains of a large house. Heaps of stone lie about, and the ground seems to hold some old unease. The villagers keep away from the place, and the two men soon learn why it has such a name.
In the ruins Tonnison finds a battered manuscript. Parts of it are damaged or unreadable, but enough survives to tell a story. He reads it by lamplight, and the rest of the book is that text in the writer's own words.
This frame matters for how you read. Tonnison is a practical man who has no wish to believe what he reads. He is our first witness, and he stands in for any reader who doubts. Hodgson uses him to make the horror feel like a document that someone left behind, rather than a tale told from a safe distance.

Questions about La Maison aux confins
What is The House on the Borderland about?
It is about an old recluse who lives in an isolated house in Ireland. His written account describes attacks by monstrous creatures from a pit and a dreamlike journey through space and time.
When was The House on the Borderland written?
William Hope Hodgson published it in 1908. It is a work of fiction, though it is framed as a real manuscript found by two travelers in the ruins of the house.
Is The House on the Borderland hard to read?
Its eerie mood and striking images make it rewarding.
Why is it called cosmic horror?
Because the fear grows from the size and age of the universe, not just from monsters. The narrator sees time and worlds fade, which makes human life seem small.
Did The House on the Borderland influence other writers?
Yes. Later horror and fantasy writers admired its mix of the haunted house and cosmic vision. H. P. Lovecraft praised it, and it helped shape weird fiction.
