For readers who love lyrical nature writing, wild and lonely landscapes, and old tales of love and fate told with deep feeling for forest, water, weather and the inner life of a child.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

The Anje Child is a short German novel by Waldemar Bonsels, the author who also gave the world the tale of Maya the Bee. It tells of a girl raised alone by her father in a vast northern moor called the Wilderness, close to the village of Gorching. Her days pass among birds, winds, reeds and black pools, and her only company is a shaggy yellow dog and an ancient woman who lives in a peat hut. The book gives you a world of weather and woodland, and a father and daughter bound by a love that neither can speak aloud.

But the story starts before Anje is born. It begins with her father, a proud farmer with a dark temper, and with a Danish painter who arrives in the village one summer morning with her easel and her boxes. What happens between those two shapes everything that follows in the moor. Let us begin there, with the stranger at the inn.

A Danish painter comes to Gorching

The novel opens with the story of Anje's father, Jakob Vinzenz Gerom. He is a young, wealthy and respected farmer in the village of Gorching, near the Gurdelbach, a stream that flows out of the great moor to the north. A brooding nature and sudden fits of rage keep his neighbors at a distance, and rumors about his soul grow with every year. Only his farmhands serve him with devotion, because he is fair.

When Gerom is thirty-five, a Danish painter named Angelika Lett steps down from a city carriage under the linden tree by the village inn. She brings no trunks, only small bundles and boxes of every odd shape. Two boys, Kaspar and Friedel Lindner, carry her easel and paint box out onto the moors, and the villagers slowly lose their wariness. She is small, calm and independent, with a childlike cheer that she shows only to those she trusts.

One morning she stops before the old walls of Gerom's farm and studies the birch avenue, the pond under the willows and the long low house with its air of quiet sadness. Gerom walks up to her without a smile and grips her hand, and holds on to it as though he has known her always. Within days she moves into the right wing of his house. Under her sorrowful smile the dark farmer seems to change, and he announces to the pastor that he will marry her, although nobody in Gorching knows anything about her but her name.

Still, Angelika keeps a hidden world to herself. Letters come and go only rarely, and Gerom, who respects her silence, never asks. Then one late summer evening a boy fetches her to the inn, where a stranger has arrived. He is no stranger to her, and from this point the story moves toward a night of violence that sends Gerom to prison and gives the book its orphaned child.
