The Aeneid, Book 6 summary

Book 6 of 12 · 42 min to read the book

In Book 6, Aeneas reaches Cumaean shores, receives a warning of war, and secures the burial rites and golden branch needed to enter the underworld with the Sibyl. His search for his father brings encounters with unburied companions, Dido, and fallen warriors, exposing grief and obligations that persist beyond death.

What happens

  1. At the Cumaean temple, the Sibyl predicts Italian warfare, continued divine hostility, and unexpected help from a Greek city.
  2. Aeneas asks to visit his father; the Sibyl requires a golden branch and burial for a dead companion.
  3. The Trojans discover Misenus, prepare his funeral, and bury him, while two doves guide Aeneas to the golden branch.
  4. After sacrifices, Aeneas follows the Sibyl underground, where she explains why unburied spirits cannot cross and answers Palinurus’s plea.
  5. The golden branch wins passage from Charon, and a drugged cake puts Cerberus to sleep.
  6. Aeneas encounters suffering souls, receives Dido’s silent rejection, and questions the mutilated Deiphobus, whose reply begins.
