The Aeneid, Book 5 summary

Book 5 of 12 · 38 min to read the book

In Book 5, Aeneas reaches Sicily, honors Anchises with funeral games, and faces a ship-burning stirred up by Juno through Iris. After Jupiter saves most of the fleet, advice and his father’s spirit guide him to settle some followers in Sicily and resume sailing toward Italy, but Sleep casts Palinurus into the sea.

What happens

  1. A storm forces Aeneas toward Sicily, where Acestes welcomes the Trojans and Aeneas prepares ceremonies for Anchises.
  2. The funeral games include rowing, running, boxing, and archery, followed by a mounted display led by Trojan youths.
  3. Iris encourages the weary Trojan women to burn the fleet, but Jupiter answers Aeneas’s prayer with rain, limiting the loss to four ships.
  4. Nautes advises leaving some followers in Sicily, and Anchises’s spirit confirms this course while directing Aeneas to seek him below.
  5. Aeneas establishes a settlement, leaves followers with Acestes, and sails again as Venus obtains Neptune’s protection at the cost of one life.
  6. Sleep overpowers Palinurus and throws him overboard; Aeneas takes the helm and mourns his missing pilot.
