Résumé de Modeste Mignon
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers who enjoy a love story with a sharp eye for money, class and vanity, and anyone curious about letters as a way to fall in love.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
Modeste Mignon is a novel by Honoré de Balzac, published in 1844 and set in the port of Le Havre and in Paris. It belongs to his huge series The Human Comedy, in the group he called scenes of private life. Balzac wrote it while he was courting Evelina Hanska, a Polish countess who had first written to him as an unknown admirer. That fact gives the book an odd warmth, because its heroine does something very like it.
The heroine is Modeste, a girl of about nineteen who lives quietly in a house by the sea. She has read too many romances, and she picks a famous poet to love without ever having met him. She writes to him in secret, and the replies she gets are not what she thinks. In this summary you will meet the family that guards her, the poet who is too busy to answer, and the man who writes in his place. We begin with the house in Le Havre, where the trouble starts.

A ruined family waits in Le Havre
The story opens in Le Havre, the busy Atlantic port at the mouth of the Seine. Modeste lives there with her mother in a house called the Chalet. Her father, Charles Mignon, was once a rich man with a title, but he lost his fortune and went abroad to rebuild it. The women he left behind live on hope and on the loyalty of others.
The chief guardian of the household is Dumay, an old soldier who served alongside Charles. He is a stern, honest man who has promised to watch over the family while his friend is away. His wife shares the duty. Together they run the house like a small garrison, and Modeste is the treasure they must protect.
Balzac takes care to show how a household like this depends on money, even when nobody speaks of it. The Chalet is comfortable but not safe. The family needs the father to come home rich, and they need Modeste to be well married. Every visitor is measured in that light, and the town of Le Havre watches closely.
This setting matters because it explains Modeste's restlessness. She is young, clever and well looked after, yet she has nothing to do and nobody to talk to as an equal. The sea is outside her window, and Paris is far away. A girl in such a position is ready to build a whole world out of books, and that is exactly what she does next.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.
