Who Heidi is
Heidi is about five when her aunt Dete brings her to live with her grandfather, the Alm-Uncle. Honest, cheerful and curious, she explores his mountain hut without being frightened by his gruff manner. She makes herself a bed in the hay and delights in the wind, the goats and the mountain light.
What Heidi wants
Heidi wants most of all to stay among the mountains she knows and loves. She also notices other people's needs, especially Peter's blind grandmother's longing for soft bread and the comfort of hymns. Her kindness takes practical forms, from asking her grandfather to repair a shutter to saving white rolls.
How Heidi changes
When Dete takes Heidi to Frankfurt to become Clara Sesemann's companion, the two girls quickly grow fond of each other. Yet the grand house and its rules leave Heidi feeling shut away from the open air. With encouragement from Clara's grandmother, Frau Sesemann, she learns to read, even as her longing for home grows.
