De quoi parle ce livre ?
Caps and Capers is a school story by Gabrielle E. Jackson, set in the early twentieth century and written for girls of about Toinette's age. The author says she is telling of boarding-school life as she saw it herself, and she dedicates the book to the girls of a school that made her winter happy. It follows one winter and spring at Sunny Bank, a school in Montcliff where the headmistress, Miss Preston, believes in trust instead of rules.
The heart of the book is Toinette Reeve, a rich and lonely girl of nearly fourteen. Her widowed father has left her for six years in a cold school run by two sisters who watch every move. When he comes home and places her in a very different school, she has to learn that adults can be friends. Along the way you meet midnight feasts in paper caps, a sleepwalking performance, a runaway sleigh and a camera mishap. You also see a quiet kindness grow in a girl who never had to think of others. Let us begin with the father who must choose a school.

A father chooses a school and regrets it
The story opens with Clayton Reeve, a lawyer of about thirty-five, alone in his library among piles of school catalogues. His wife has died, and he cannot bear to stay in the house they built together. Nursemaids and governesses have driven him close to despair, so he decides to place his small daughter in an ideal school and travel for a few months. His little girl, Toinette, climbs into his arms and calls him Papa Clayton, and he explains his plan to her.
The school he picks is run by the Misses Carter, and it proves a poor choice. They can teach from books and make rules, but they have no insight into a child's heart. The months he planned become nearly six years, because his law firm keeps sending him farther across the world. He writes to Toinette that he is glad she is happy, never guessing how much she longs for him.
At Miss Carter's school Toinette learns hard things early. She sees that a girl with money is excused for faults that would crush a poorer girl, such as her classmate Barbara Ellsworth. She despises the favours she receives and tells her roommate, Cicely Powell, that she is only a profitable piece of stock to Miss Carter. Her eyes grow distrustful, though her mouth still curves upward like her mother's.
On a mild Saturday in December, Toinette is restless and sad. Cicely speaks to her on the porch, and Toinette looks near tears and walks away to the garden summerhouse. She watches the road to the station. A bearded, sunburned man in tweed strides toward the school and stops to ask the way, never seeing her behind the lattice. She knows his voice before she knows his face, and she runs to him crying for Papa.
That’s 1 of 7 key points.
