Aesop's Fables, Part 268 summary

Part 268 of 284 · 1 min to read the part

In The Man Who Lost His Spade, a man suspects his laborers of theft and takes them to town to swear their innocence before gods he considers more capable. An announcement about a theft from the city temple makes him abandon this plan because those gods cannot protect their own property.

What happens

  1. A Man discovers that his Spade is missing when he comes to work in his vineyard.
  2. He questions his laborers, but they all deny knowing anything about the missing tool.
  3. He insists they go to a town temple to swear their innocence, trusting town gods more than country gods.
  4. At the town gates, they hear a crier offer a reward for information about a theft from the city temple.
  5. The Man decides to return home because he doubts gods robbed in their own temple can identify his thief.
