Aesop's Fables, Part 267 summary

Part 267 of 284 · 2 min to read the part

In The Lion, the Fox, and the Stag, a sick Lion sends the Fox to lure the Stag into his den with a false promise of kingship. The Stag escapes one attack but accepts another deception and returns, allowing the Lion to kill him and the Fox to steal his brains.

What happens

  1. The sick Lion asks the Fox to bring the Stag to his den so he can eat him.
  2. The Fox claims that the dying Lion chooses the Stag as king, and the flattered Stag follows him.
  3. The Lion mistimes his attack, and the Stag escapes to the wood with torn ears.
  4. The Fox persuades the angry Stag that the Lion only wants to share secrets and might choose the Wolf instead.
  5. The Stag returns, and the Lion kills and eats him while the Fox secretly takes his brains.
  6. When the Lion searches for the brains, the Fox argues that returning twice proves the Stag has none.
