Have you ever wondered why the most powerful truths are seen clearest through the eyes of a child? In Youth, Isaac Asimov presents a quietly brilliant tale that weaves science fiction with a child’s sense of wonder and mischief. First published in 1952, this short story showcases Asimov’s signature genius—combining big ideas with deceptively simple storytelling.
The plot follows two boys, Red and Slim, who discover what they believe to be alien creatures on a rural estate. As they hatch a plan to keep them as pets, two adults—scientists from different worlds—meet to negotiate a crucial alliance. Asimov masterfully sets up a dual perspective, contrasting childlike innocence with grown-up logic, until both narratives collide in an ending that redefines the entire story.
At once playful and profound, Youth explores themes of perception, communication, empathy, and the biases we carry about the “other.” With elegant simplicity and a touch of cosmic irony, Asimov delivers a tale that resonates long after the final line.
