About this book
What can a writer’s friends, habits and favourite places reveal that a grand biography might miss?
In A Little English Gallery, Louise Imogen Guiney gathers short portraits of English figures from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Each essay offers a character, a setting and a habit of mind rather than a full life story. Together, these sketches form a small gallery where minor writers receive the same loving attention as major ones.
Guiney looks closely at the friends, habits and places around her subjects. A modest life becomes a way into a whole age. Her poet’s ear shapes careful, often musical prose, while her love of England’s libraries and old authors gives these literary portraits their warmth. The pleasure lies in looking closely, not hurrying through events.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Magdalen Newport raised a remarkable Herbert household
Guiney opens with Magdalen Newport, born around 1561 in Shropshire. She marries Richard Herbert, a black-bearded Welsh gentleman known for his courage. Later, as Lady Danvers, she earns a double place in literature. She is the mother of the poet George Herbert and the friend of John Donne.
The Herbert children fill the early pages like a roll call. Edward becomes an ambassador and a writer. Richard fights his way across Europe and carries twenty-four scars to his grave. George becomes the gentle poet and country parson. Magdalen jokes that her family matches the number of the children of Job.

What is A Little English Gallery about?

Who was Lady Danvers?
Lady Danvers, born Magdalen Newport, was the mother of the poet George Herbert and the friend and helper of John Donne. Guiney uses scattered records, letters and Donne's funeral sermon to picture her generous, cheerful character.
Who were Topham Beauclerk and Bennet Langton?
They were two young friends of Samuel Johnson. Beauclerk was a brilliant wit and book collector descended from Charles II. Langton was a tall, gentle Greek scholar from Lincolnshire. Both brought laughter and comfort to Johnson.
