About this book
What is a fortune worth when the wealth you hold today may belong to yesterday tomorrow?
In A Millionaire of Yesterday, E. Phillips Oppenheim puts sudden wealth at the heart of a story about money, status and risk. A fortune can arrive quickly and vanish just as fast. Having money offers no promise of safety, and ambition gives people reasons to reach for more.
This novel brings you into Oppenheim’s early world of secrets and social ambition. Its central question is what it means to possess wealth that may already belong to the past. Read for the pull of the plot, and for ideas of class and success that reflect its time.

In short
A Millionaire of Yesterday is a novel by E. Phillips Oppenheim, an English writer who turned out popular fiction for more than forty years.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Oppenheim wrote for a wide public
Edward Phillips Oppenheim was born in London in 1866 and worked in the family leather business while he began to write. He sold his stories steadily, and over his life he produced an enormous number of novels and tales. Few writers of his day were as productive, and readers across Britain and America knew his name.
He wrote for people who wanted to be entertained on a train, in an armchair or on a holiday. His books were serialised in magazines and then sold in cheap editions. That setting shaped his style. He kept chapters short and sentences clear, and he made sure each scene pushed the reader toward the next.
