About this book

Across the Arctic ice, courage depends on dogs, sledges, hard-earned skill, and the people who know the cold.

In A Negro Explorer at the North Pole, Matthew Alexander Henson tells his own story of exploration beside Robert Peary. From a poor boyhood in Maryland and a youth at sea, he moves toward years of northern expeditions, where endurance and practical knowledge matter at every step.

Henson brings you close to the ships, sledge parties, and Inuit families who make the work possible. As repeated attempts give way to another march toward the Pole, his direct account reveals the effort behind the expedition. It also gives space to an African American explorer's experience after the world has heard Peary's side.

What you’ll discover

  • Learning from the Inuit Discover the people and practical knowledge that help Henson live in the far north.
