About this book
One horse, one letter, and a fierce ambition carry a young swordsman toward Paris—and into a queen’s dangerous secret.
In The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas and Auguste Maquet follow d’Artagnan, a poor young Gascon determined to join the King’s Musketeers. Paris offers no easy welcome. His pride leads him toward duels, but it also brings him to Athos, Porthos, and Aramis: three very different men whose loyalty changes his life.
Beyond the sword fights, the French court is a place where private gifts carry public danger. Constance Bonacieux draws d’Artagnan toward the queen’s affairs, while Cardinal Richelieu works to keep her in check. With the charming, cunning Milady de Winter serving the Cardinal, courage alone may not be enough to protect those d’Artagnan loves.

In short
A poor boy, one horse, one letter and a quarrel that sparks a long rivalry. That is how The Three Musketeers begins.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A poor Gascon rides toward Paris
The story begins in April 1625 in the market town of Meung, where a young man arrives on a yellow horse. He is d'Artagnan, the son of a Gascon gentleman with little money. His father gives him a horse, fifteen crowns and a letter to Monsieur de Tréville, who commands the King's Musketeers.
The advice is blunt too. Bear insult from no one except the king and the Cardinal, and fight whenever honour calls. At the inn, a pale, scarred stranger laughs at the horse. The young man takes offence at once and draws his sword. He sees the stranger again, but cannot stop him leaving. Later he finds that the letter is gone.

What is The Three Musketeers about?
It follows d'Artagnan, a young Gascon who goes to Paris in 1625 to join the King's Musketeers. He befriends Athos, Porthos and Aramis and becomes caught up in a plot against the queen by Cardinal Richelieu.
Is The Three Musketeers a true story?
Not strictly. Dumas based it on old memoirs about a real soldier named d'Artagnan and set it in real events of the 1620s, but most scenes and many characters are invented. It was first published in 1844.
Why is the book called The Three Musketeers when there are four heroes?
The three are Athos, Porthos and Aramis, who are already Musketeers. D'Artagnan is a newcomer who wishes to join them, so the title names the three while the story follows the young man who becomes their fourth friend.
