About this book
In a jungle of dangerous animals and hidden peoples, strength alone is not enough.
In Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle, Edgar Rice Burroughs brings you into wild country with a hero raised between two worlds. Born to English nobles and brought up among great apes, Tarzan trusts his strength and his wits. Survival demands both, but his loyalty to friends gives him more than himself to protect.
Honor drives this fast-moving adventure. Tarzan protects those who cannot protect themselves and keeps faith with his friends. Around him lies a fictional Africa of wild country, dangerous animals, and hidden peoples. The book also carries the racial and imperial prejudices of its time, making it a revealing encounter with early popular fiction.

A shot in the forest binds Tarzan
The story begins with Tantor the elephant dozing in the midday heat while Tarzan lies face down along his back. The ape-man is half asleep and feels safe. Nearby, Arab hunters named Fahd and Motlog are tracking the elephant for ivory. A Galla slave named Fejjuan leads them, and he dreams of the homeland he was stolen from as a boy.
Fahd fires his old matchlock and misses. Tantor bolts in fright, and a low branch sweeps Tarzan from his back. He lies stunned on the ground while the hunters gather around him. Fahd wants to kill the naked white man on the spot, but Motlog stops him. The men tie Tarzan's wrists with strips of camel hide and take him to their camp.
