About this book

What happens when a trader learns to read the market but still cannot master his own hopes?

In Edwin Lefevre’s Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, Larry Livingston starts as a boy chalking stock prices on a board in Boston. He learns to bet in bucket shops, then moves into the larger world of Wall Street. As the stakes grow, his eye for prices faces a harder test: knowing when to act and when to wait.

Readers have long connected Livingston with the real trader Jesse Livermore. Told in Livingston’s own voice, this story follows fortunes won, lost, and rebuilt. Fear, hope, tips, and ego shape his decisions as much as the prices before him. These memories offer lessons through lived mistakes, rather than charts, formulas, or a tidy set of trading rules.

What you’ll discover

  • A boy watching prices Enter a Boston brokerage where chalking numbers becomes Livingston’s first education in markets.
  • The nerve of speculation Step inside bucket shops, where small bets sharpen his judgment and test his confidence.
  • The patience to wait Meet Mr. Partridge, called Old Turkey, whose example makes sitting still a lesson worth considering.
  • Hope against hard evidence Watch tips and ego pull Livingston away from what the prices tell him.
  • Fortunes and fresh starts Follow an uneven path through ambition, costly errors, and the work of rebuilding.

Is it for you?

This book suits anyone curious about markets, from new investors to seasoned traders, and anyone who likes a plain tale of ambition and mistakes. It also suits readers of business history. If you want exact modern methods, charts or formulas, you will find it less suited.
