About this book
Can one talkative girl bring laughter into a house ruled by duty, order, and very little warmth?
Rebecca Randall leaves her crowded, poor Maine farm for a home and an education with two aunts in Riverboro. She wants to make good for her family. But Aunt Miranda Sawyer values order, and Rebecca arrives with stories, questions, and an imagination that does not fit neatly into household rules.
Aunt Jane quietly eases Rebecca's way, while school and friendship open a wider world beyond the brick house. Back at Sunnybrook Farm, her mother, Aurelia, struggles with debt and seven children. Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin brings these worries into a warm village story where kindness and stubborn hope meet daily demands.

In short
Picture a ten-year-old girl climbing onto the driver's seat of a mail coach, clutching a pink parasol she will not open for fear it will fade. She asks the driver what Sunnybrook Farm makes him see, and when he cannot say, she paints the brook for him herself.

A talkative child wins over the stage driver
On a warm May day in Maine, the Riverboro stage rattles along with one passenger, a small girl in starched buff calico. Her name is Rebecca Randall, and her mother has sent her to live with two aunts in the brick house. The driver, Jeremiah Cobb, lifts her onto the front seat, and the talk begins.
Rebecca tells him about her six brothers and sisters. She explains that her mother calls the home place Randall's Farm, but she calls it Sunnybrook Farm. When Mr. Cobb cannot picture it, she builds the brook for him, shallow and chattering, full of sparkles. Names, she insists, make a difference.
