About this book
What does a man behind Standard Oil want you to understand about work, power, and wealth?
In Random Reminiscences of Men and Events, John D. Rockefeller looks back on early work in Cleveland, the growth of the oil trade, and the people beside him. These loose, friendly recollections offer something more personal than a record of deals: a private businessman explaining the habits and judgments that guide him.
Standard Oil faces attacks in newspapers, magazines, and the courts. Rockefeller offers his own calm account, arguing that cooperation can steady an unsettled industry and that great wealth brings responsibility. This is his perspective, not a detailed critical history: a chance to consider how he explains business, trust, and the duty to give.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A boy learns thrift from ledgers and turkeys
Rockefeller says he owes his father a great deal, because his father taught him the principles and methods of business. From early childhood the boy kept a small account book he calls Ledger A. It records his income, his spending, and the small sums he was taught to give away.
His first real business is turkeys. At seven or eight he raises them with curds his mother gives him from the milk, and he sells them all. Because he pays no costs, everything he takes in is profit, and he keeps his records carefully. His mother is strict and uses a birch switch to hold the family standard.
