About this book
What does a man behind Standard Oil want you to understand about work, power, and wealth?
In Random Reminiscences of Men and Events, John D. Rockefeller looks back on early work in Cleveland, the growth of the oil trade, and the people beside him. These loose, friendly recollections offer something more personal than a record of deals: a private businessman explaining the habits and judgments that guide him.
Standard Oil faces attacks in newspapers, magazines, and the courts. Rockefeller offers his own calm account, arguing that cooperation can steady an unsettled industry and that great wealth brings responsibility. This is his perspective, not a detailed critical history: a chance to consider how he explains business, trust, and the duty to give.

A rich man chooses to look back
By 1909 Rockefeller was one of the best known and most criticised men in the United States. Standard Oil had been attacked in newspapers, in magazines and in the courts. He had said little in reply for many years. This book is one of the few places where he speaks at length about his own life and work.
He does not write like a lawyer or a politician. The tone is relaxed and a little shy, as if he were chatting with a visitor on a porch. He jumps from one memory to another, which is why he calls the pieces random. He tells small stories, mentions old colleagues by name, and drifts back to ideas that matter to him.

What is Random Reminiscences of Men and Events about?
It is John D. Rockefeller's informal memoir. He looks back on his work in Cleveland, the partners he valued, the growth of the oil business, his belief in combination, and his ideas about giving money away wisely.
When was Random Reminiscences of Men and Events written?
It was published in 1909, when Rockefeller was elderly and no longer ran Standard Oil day to day. The chapters first appeared as magazine pieces and were then collected into a book.
Is Random Reminiscences of Men and Events a true story?
Yes, it is a memoir, so it is his own account of real events. Because he is defending his career, historians advise reading it alongside other histories of Standard Oil for a fuller picture.
