About this book
What if the person you judge most harshly is the one you most need to understand?
In the English countryside, Elizabeth Bennet wants a marriage built on respect. Her mother wants husbands for all five daughters before their home passes to a male cousin. When Elizabeth meets the wealthy, reserved Mr Darcy at a country dance, their first impressions leave little room for affection.
Around them, Jane Bennet hopes for happiness with the friendly Charles Bingley, while the charming George Wickham offers Elizabeth another reason to distrust Darcy. Money, rank and family expectations press against private feelings. Jane Austen turns these tensions into a sharp comedy about how readily people mistake confidence for clear judgment.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A rich bachelor arrives and a village stirs
The story opens with a joke about wealth and marriage. Mrs. Bennet tells her husband that Netherfield Park has been rented by a young man named Bingley, who has four or five thousand pounds a year. She wants Mr. Bennet to call on him at once, because she has five daughters to settle. He answers with dry remarks.
Then he goes anyway and tells nobody. The news comes out when he tells his second daughter, Lizzy, that he hopes Mr. Bingley will like her hat. Mrs. Bennet swings from sulking to delight in a single breath. Mr. Bennet is clever and sarcastic. Mrs. Bennet has little sense and a firm belief that her nerves are always suffering.

What is Pride and Prejudice about?
It follows Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters in rural England as a wealthy newcomer moves nearby. Elizabeth and the proud Mr. Darcy misjudge each other, and the story traces how love, money, family, and honest self-examination change them both.
Who is Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice?
Fitzwilliam Darcy is the wealthy owner of Pemberley in Derbyshire and the close friend of Mr. Bingley. He is reserved and proud at first meeting, and much of the story is about how Elizabeth comes to see him more fairly.
What do the title words pride and prejudice mean?
Pride shows in Darcy's sense of rank and in Elizabeth's confidence in her own sharp judgment. Prejudice is the quick opinion each forms about the other and about people like Wickham. The book tests both qualities through scenes and conversations.
