The story, without the ending

When rich Mr Bingley rents Netherfield Park near the Bennets, Mrs Bennet hopes that one of her five daughters will marry him.

At a village ball, Bingley is delighted by Jane, while Mr Darcy's dismissive remark about Elizabeth colours her opinion of him.

Elizabeth goes to Netherfield to nurse Jane, and her conversations with Darcy draw his interest while she mistakes his attention for criticism.

Mr Collins visits with plans to choose a Bennet wife, while the charming Mr Wickham wins Elizabeth's trust with his account of Darcy's cruelty.

Elizabeth refuses Mr Collins, and Bingley's departure disappoints Jane, while Charlotte Lucas accepts Collins because she wants a comfortable home.

Visiting Charlotte in Kent, Elizabeth meets Darcy again near Lady Catherine de Bourgh's home, but his frequent calls leave her uncertain about his intentions.

Themes

First impressions: Elizabeth trusts her skill at judging people, but wounded pride and charming manners shape what she is willing to believe.

Pride and rank: Darcy's sense of social rank affects his manners and makes his growing interest in Elizabeth a source of conflict.

Marriage and money: The Bennet daughters' uncertain future shows why marriage involves financial security as well as affection and respect.

Women's choices: Elizabeth's wish to choose for herself stands against a society that offers women few ways to secure their future.

Self knowledge: The story asks whether people can recognise their own faults and change their minds when better evidence appears.
