About this book
What if your restless search for distraction keeps you from facing the questions that matter most?
In Pascal's Pensées, Blaise Pascal turns from the reach of reason to the restless human heart. These short sayings, notes and longer essays form an unfinished defence of Christian faith. A mathematician, physicist and Catholic thinker, Pascal asks what we can know—and where proof stops.
The subjects shift from lawyers' robes to the vastness of nature, from shaky judgment to the wager on God. Pascal portrays people as both grand and wretched: unable to sit still, unable to be certain, yet longing for more. His arguments invite close attention whether or not you share his faith.

In short
The Pensées, which means Thoughts in French, is a pile of notes left behind by Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician, physicist and Catholic thinker. He died in 1662 at the age of thirty-nine.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A book Pascal never finished writing
Pascal planned an apology for the Christian religion. In his day that word meant a defence, not an excuse. He meant to speak to the educated men of Paris, the sort who played cards, read Montaigne and doubted everything. They were not hostile to religion so much as bored by it. Pascal wanted to make them care, and only then to show them why the faith was reasonable.
He began gathering notes in the late 1650s, and his health was poor. He suffered constant pain, and he died in August 1662. When he was gone, relatives and friends from the community of Port-Royal found papers sorted into bundles, some tied with string, plus many loose slips. Some bundles carried headings. Others were simply piled together. Nobody could be sure of the order he intended.

What is Pascal's Pensées about?
It is a collection of thoughts Pascal gathered for a defence of the Christian faith. He looks at human misery and greatness, the limits of reason and the need for diversion, and he argues that faith, supported by evidence, answers the human condition.
What is Pascal's wager?
It is the argument that you should bet that God exists. If you are right, you gain infinite happiness, and if you are wrong, you lose little. Pascal addresses it to a doubter who cannot decide by reason alone.
Why is the Pensées unfinished?
Pascal died in 1662, aged thirty-nine, before writing the book he planned. Friends and family found his papers in bundles and loose slips and published them in 1670, so the order of the thoughts is debated.
