About this book

What remains of a moment of glory when the race is over and the victor goes home?

In The Extant Odes of Pindar, athletic triumph becomes a song worth keeping. These forty-five surviving victory odes gather around four festivals: Olympia, Delphi, Nemea and the Isthmus of Corinth. Runners, boxers, wrestlers and chariot owners receive praise, while their families and cities share in the honour. Behind each celebration stands a question: how can excellence endure?

The Olympian, Pythian, Nemean and Isthmian odes move between a victor’s moment and the world of Greek myth. The opening Olympian song celebrates Hieron of Syracuse and his winning racehorse, Pherenikos. Elsewhere, praise meets advice to kings and reflections on luck, envy and death. For Pindar, poetry gives fading victory a voice, and that work is sacred.

In short

Pindar was a Greek poet from Thebes, in the region of Boeotia, who wrote songs for winners at the great athletic festivals. The Extant Odes gathers the forty-five victory songs that survive, grouped by the four games that inspired them: Olympia, Delphi, Nemea and the Isthmus of Corinth.

Pindar sings for winners and patrons

Pindar was born near Thebes, probably in the last years of the sixth century before Christ. He grew up in a world of aristocratic families, local cults and rival cities. As a young man he was already trusted to compose for noble houses, and soon his reputation spread far beyond Boeotia. He worked for patrons in Aigina, Athens, Corinth, Sicily and the North African city of Cyrene.
