About this book

What if knowing what is right means little until you act on it?

In The Complete Works of Wang Yangming, the question is how to become good. A scholar, governor and field commander in Ming China, Wang develops his thinking amid exile, rebellion and court politics. He argues that moral knowing lives within the mind, rather than waiting at the end of a long study of the outside world.

The collection brings together the Chuanxilu, or Instructions for Practical Living, with letters, essays, official memorials and poems. Recorded conversations let you follow Wang's teaching as an exchange rather than a tidy system. His Inquiry on the Great Learning explores a demanding idea: caring for heaven, earth and all things as one body.

What you’ll discover

  • The mind as starting point Explore Wang's challenge to the view that principle must be sought in things outside yourself.
  • Knowledge put to work Consider why, for Wang, truly knowing the good cannot be separated from doing it.
  • A compass within Meet liangzhi, the innate moral knowing at the heart of Wang's later teaching.
  • Practice amid daily affairs Discover a philosophy that asks you to train the mind without retreating from the world.
  • Care beyond the self Follow an ethics that asks what it means to regard all things as one body.

Principle is found in the mind

Wang grew up in a world shaped by Zhu Xi, whose commentaries governed the civil service examinations. Zhu Xi taught that principle, the pattern of right order, is found in every thing, and that a student must investigate things one by one. Wang took this seriously as a young man. The story goes that he and a friend sat before bamboo in the garden, trying to grasp its principle. After three days the friend fell ill, but Wang kept on, and he fell ill too.

What is the Chuanxilu by Wang Yangming about?

It is a record of Wang's conversations and letters, gathered by his students. It sets out his teaching that the mind holds moral principle, that knowing and acting are one, and that people should develop their innate sense of right.

What does the unity of knowledge and action mean?

Wang meant that real knowing already includes doing. If someone claims to know what is right but does not act, he says their knowledge is not complete, because selfish desire has blocked it.

What is liangzhi in Wang Yangming's philosophy?

Liangzhi means innate or good knowing, the natural sense of right and wrong in every person. The term comes from Mencius. Wang taught that you should follow it and remove the selfishness that clouds it.
