About this book

What can a wilderness journey reveal about faith, failure, and the need for guidance?

In Notes on the Book of Numbers, Charles Henry Mackintosh follows Israel from Sinai toward the land God promises in the biblical account. Moses counts the tribes, the camp gathers around the tabernacle, and the Levites receive their work. Mackintosh reads this ordered camp as a starting point for reflecting on Christian life and service.

The road brings hardship, complaint, and challenges to Moses and Aaron. For Mackintosh, these events speak to believers who feel that the world is not their home. His commentary connects the Old Testament stories with Christ and daily conduct, exploring how, in his Christian reading, divine guidance and grace meet human failure.

God orders the camp around his dwelling

Mackintosh begins where Numbers begins, with a census. God tells Moses to count the men of Israel who are able to go to war, tribe by tribe. To Mackintosh this is more than bookkeeping. It shows that God knows his people one by one, and that he sees them as an army on the march, not as a crowd of wanderers.
