About this book

What can a Roman emperor teach you about facing anger, loss, and mornings when you cannot leave your bed?

In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius turns from ruling an empire to examining himself. His private notebook holds reminders about living with reason, humility, and purpose amid war, grief, and political burdens. He writes not for an audience, but to strengthen his own character. The result is a close encounter with a powerful man who still struggles with ordinary feelings.

Throughout his notes, Marcus returns to a central Stoic idea: you cannot control events, but you can control your judgments and actions. The opening book gives thanks to people who shape him. Elsewhere, short reflections explore difficult colleagues, vanity, duty, death, and nature. These are repeated reminders to practise, rather than a tidy argument to follow.

A ruler writes notes to himself

Marcus Aurelius was born in Rome into a wealthy family and was marked early for power. The emperor Hadrian noticed him as a boy, and Antoninus Pius adopted him and made him heir. In 161 he took the throne, sharing it at first with his adoptive brother Lucius Verus. His reign was not peaceful.

What is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius about?

It is a set of private notes in which the Roman emperor reminds himself how to live well. The themes include self-control, acceptance of fate, duty to others, the shortness of life, and seeing things without false value.

Did Marcus Aurelius write Meditations for publication?

No. It was a personal notebook, written in Greek during his later years, much of it while on campaign. The Greek title is usually given as To Himself. The name Meditations came later, after the notes were gathered and copied.

What is Stoicism in Meditations?

Stoicism is the school of philosophy that Marcus follows. It teaches that virtue is the only true good, that we should focus on what we control, and that we should live in agreement with nature and reason.
