About this book
What if every profit is a setback, and spending your last dollar is the only way to become rich?
Montgomery Brewster, known as Monty, inherits a million dollars from his grandfather and can finally live like his wealthy New York friends. Then a larger inheritance comes with a peculiar condition: he must spend the first fortune within a year, under strict rules, and have nothing to show for it.
Monty turns to entertaining, expensive pleasures, business ventures, and travel. But profits and helpful friends keep spoiling his plans. He cannot explain his reckless spending, even when those closest to him begin to worry. With Peggy Gray's affection and Barbara Drew's place in his romantic hopes, money is far from the only thing at stake.

In short
Brewster's Millions is a comic novel by the American writer George Barr McCutcheon, published in 1902. It asks a question that sounds like a joke: how hard can it be to spend a fortune?
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A birthday dinner ends with a death
The story opens in the studio of the painter Paul Pettingill, where ten young men called the Little Sons of the Rich are celebrating the twenty-fifth birthday of Montgomery Brewster. Monty is tall, easygoing and well liked. He is the only grandson of Edwin Peter Brewster, a banker with many millions, and everyone expects him to inherit.
Monty's parents ran off together for love, and the old man never forgave them. When they died, he took the boy in, but the house was cold, and Monty chose to live on his bank salary in rooms at Mrs. Gray's on Fortieth Street. So he arrives at the party as a hardworking clerk with fine prospects and little cash.

What is Brewster's Millions about?
It is about Monty Brewster, who inherits one million dollars and learns he will receive seven million more if he spends the first million within a year and owns nothing at the end. The rules are strict, and he cannot explain them.
Who is Swearengen Jones?
Jones is a rich Montana rancher and the executor of James Sedgwick's will. He sets the rules Monty must follow, judges his conduct, and communicates mostly by short, funny telegrams that are among the book's best jokes.
Why must Monty spend the money?
His uncle James Sedgwick hated Monty's grandfather and refused to let any of the old man's money mix with his own. So he ordered Monty to be penniless on his twenty-sixth birthday before the seven million could pass to him.
